Summer Plans

This summer I will be volunteering for three months in Kenya with Students for International Development (SID), a grassroots NGO run by University of Toronto graduate students and alumni.  SID has organized projects overseas since 2007 and will be training me over the next few months to manage several initiatives in the Education sector.

The projects I will be managing are Early Childhood Development Education Centers where SID sponsors the education of 125 orphaned or disadvantaged children, a nutrition program, staff training, and acquisition of learning materials; the Simboyi Primary School Nutrition Programme where SID sponsors a nutrition programme for 400 students aged 5 – 14 from an especially low-income community in Western Kenya; and Children’s Rights Workshops where SID partners with People’s Rights Forum – a Kenyan NGO formed to fight human rights abuses – to work with two community schools to form student rights groups and to initiate a counselling program. I am very passionate about education and social justice, and am very eager to apply what I have been learning in the past year to these education programs in the Sabatia District in Kenya.

My goal is to raise $3000 for my projects prior to my May departure. All contributions go towards project expenses overseas since our Canadian volunteers are responsible for the cost of the trip.
